The North Yorkshire village of Weaverthorpe, in the Ryedale district of the county, lies approximately 21 kilometres from Scarborough. The village is steeped in history, having been mentioned in the Domesday Book when called Wiveretorp. In the middle of the 19th century the village held its own races, starting on Tuesday 9th October 1849. That day the principal race was the Weaverthorpe Stakes which was won by Miss Milton. The next year, on Tuesday 8th October 1850, the Waeverthorpe Plate over 1 ¼ miles went to Mr Lamplugh’s Queen of Trumps. Meetings continued for the next 16 years before the final record of a meeting on Tuesday 16th October 1866.
